Belagavi: Dentist Savita’s painful death changing an unempathetic law in Ireland may come as a joy form many but the sorrow of losing a daughter still engulfs her parents.
A native of Belagavi, the dentist lost her life in Ireland on 21 October 2012 because of the doctors who refused to terminate her seven month old pregnancy refering to the Catholic law.
The aggrieved parents Anandaneppa Yalagi and wife Akkamahadevi for whom the justice was delayed for 6 years yet attribute their little relief of having won the battle to the Irish citizens.
Following a referendum of public voting by the Irish government on May 25. The results announced on Saturday evening, the Irish citizens voted against the law. The votes led to the repealing of 9th amendment of Irish constitution. This is a revolution by the Yalagi couple which not only changed a draconian law but also the new one was christened after Savita.
Savita Halappanavar had died due to an abortion bid gone awry six years ago in Ireland where she was living with her husband Praveen. The tragic incident led to revolutionary developments in Ireland. The rationalists led by women fought in unison for years to scrap the law that restricted abortion.
