Belagavi: The woes of the depositors at the now-defunct Sangolli Rayanna Cooperative Society are mounting. The society owned by filmmaker Anand Appugol closed shops without returning the Rs 320 Crore in deposits. Holding protests and knocking on the courts for justice, the depositors are yet to get their money back.
Now, it has come to light that the authorities are seriously considering handing over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Deputy Commissioner S Ziyaullah said that a discussion would be held with Police Commissioner Dr. D C Rajappa soon.
Thousands of depositors lost their hard earned money in the multi-crore scam. Several complaints and memorandums have been submitted in this regard.
In September 2017, Belagavi police arrested Anand Appugol, Chairman of the Sangolli Rayanna Cooperative Society, on charges of failing to repay money to the depositors. After an enquiry, the registrar of cooperative societies, in his detailed report, indicted Appugol for breach of trust, violation of provisions of the Cooperative Act among other charges.
