Belgaum: The vulnerable act in the need of remunerative prices and payment of dues to farmers, a sugarcane farmer committed suicide by taking poison at the protest site on Wednesday November 27.
A Sugarcane grower who had participated in a protest meeting where winter session of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly is being held took the drastic step as the tension triggered.
The farmer is identified as Vittal Arabhavi (60) a resident of Kankanwadi village in Raibag taluk of Belgaum district.
It is known that Vittal Arabhavi, was facing severe financial problems after a sugar factory failed to pay him money for the 120 tonnes of cane he supplied last year.
He was under an enormous pressure to pay back the money to his landlord from whom he had taken five acres of land to farm, as Vittal did not receive money from the sugarcane factory he could not repay his debt.
He had come to the protest site, in front of Suvarna Soudha, were he addressed the protestors for a period of time and turned abusive using objectionable language against the Government and the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
He later sat along with the other protestors but took out two bottles of pesticide and consumed. Others who noticed it rushed him to Gopal Jina Gouda Bhartesh Homoepathy Medical College Hospital, where he died while being treated.
Advised Price Act to be active from Monday December 2, will coincide with the commencement of the winter session of the Assembly, wherein the sugarcane farmers were demanding that the government declare sugarcane prices under the State itself.
