Court jails rapist despite him marrying minor victim

Belagavi: In a bid to save himself from punishment, a man married a minor girl after raping her. But the court decided to take strict action and sentenced him to 10 years of rigourous imprisonment.

RapeThe third district session court accused of abducting and raping a minor under Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.

The man is identified as Krishna Dasharath Nitturkar (25), resident of Nandihalli Road in Desur under the limits of Belagavi (Rural) police station.

Reportedly on June 26 , 2013, Krishna abducted the minor and raped her, he then kept her with him for a span of 3 days and released her.

After returning home, the girl registered a complaint in the police station .With the aim to escape punishment Krishna then forced the girl to marry him.

According to the statement, registered by the girl, the accused kidnapped her on 26th June and kept her at the lodge in Kanakavali village in Khanapur taluk for three days, where he sexually assaulted and forced her to marry him. Later he took her to his relatives’ home at Gurlgunji where he raped her for two days. Later, he sent her back by bus.

Police had registered a complaint against the accused under sections 363, 366 and 376 (2) (N) besides POCSO Act. Police arrested him on 7th July and sent to Hindalaga jail. During the hearing, the girl and her family members registered their witnesses in court. Meanwhile, district court declined his bail application but he succeeded in getting conditional bail from high court.

After the accused returned from jail, both families came together to compromise the case by tying couple into knot.

After the registered marriage, the couple started living together and also gave birth to a baby girl. During the time, the hearing of the case was still going in court.

On Monday, Judge T Venkatesh Naik ordered 10 years imprisonment and Rs 25,000 compensation to the victim girl. The verdict of the case is the issue of debate in Belagavi area, as it’s a special case of punishing rape accused who married the victim.
