Belagavi: With only few days to go for the state assembly elections, campaigning by political parties has gained momentum and they are leaving no stones unturned to appease voters from all sections of the society.

However one such attempt by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to appease the Marathi voters in the Chikkodi-Sadalga constituency(Belagavi district), during an election rally held at Bedakihala village in Chikkodi on May 4 by chanting ‘Jai Maharashtra’ slogan has seemingly backfired.

The constituency, due to its proximity with Maharastra harbors a sizeable number of Marathi popluation and the minister, in an attempt to capture Marathi votes for party candidate Anna Saheb Jolle started his speech with the Jai Maharashtra slogan, which did not go down well with the Kannadigas.

He was however quick to alter his speech, after getting a hint from the BJP leaders sharing the dais with him and attacked the ruling Congress party for its failure on several fronts.

The Congress has fielded Ganesh Hukkeri as its candidate from the Chikkodi constituency.

Notably, Karnataka and Maharashtra are at loggerheads over boundary issue in Belagavi
