Belagavi: Large scale irregularities in garbage collection and disposal is a common complaint heard across the state. But in Belagavi, the authorities have installed over one lakh Radio Frequency Identification Readers (RFID readers) on the gates of homes to ensure that the garbage collection is done properly.

This initiative has been taken up under the Smart City Project implemented by the Central government.

According to the authorities, these RFID readers have been installed in the residences in the Ramatirthanagar, Bhagyanagar, Vadagavi, Srinagar and surrounding areas.

“Under this initiative, all the garbage collectors are given cards to swipe after collecting waste from each household. They need to swipe their cards through the readers installed in all the households to notify that they have collected the waste,” informed authorities.

“Once a pourakarmika swipes the card, a message is recorded at the control room. This data will be used to keep an eye on the waste collection, waste segregation at the source, waste disposal etc,” they added.
