fadnavisBelagavi: The border area of Belagavi is witnessing tension following the territorial and the language issue raked up by the Shiv Sena. However, joining the wagon, former chief minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis has said that Karnataka will have to face very harsh consequences if the Marathas living in Karnataka face any trouble in Belagavi.

It all began with Karnataka Nava Nirman Sena leader Bhimshankar Patil calling upon people to kill the Belagavi-based Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti members at sight. As a reaction to this statement, Shiva Sena activists went about staging protests in the region, blackening Kannada name boards and also stalled screening of Kannada films. Reacting to the same, Fadnavis said that there is ‘Karnataka Occupied Maharashtra, where majority of people living are Marathas.

These regions must be given back to Maharashtra,” he said adding that he will keep his political ideology aside and stand by the Marathas.

He also said that he is very clear on the fight to merge even other Marathi speaking regions of Karnataka like Karwar etc in Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra governments in the past too had been pressing for merger of at least 800 pockets of Karnataka, including Karwar that has large number of Marathi speaking population.
