Belagavi: Another communal clash broke out at Khanapur and Londa in Belagavi after few leaders of a right wing group made a controversial speech on Saturday.
The leaders reportedly made a provocative speech at a Dharma Sabha at Londa near Belagavi which was objected by a group of people. The angry group threw stones which triggered a fierce clash.
People of two different communities indulged in pelting stones and damaged many vehicles in the area.
Police who rushed to the spot detained as many as 42 people, most of them belonging to Sri Rame Sene and other pro-hindu organisations and were produced in a local court. Those arrested included Sri Ram Sena’s Pandit Ogale, Maruti Sutar and Ramakant Konduskar, and BJP leader Baburao Desai.
Additional Superintendent of Police Ravindra Gadadi speaking to sources said that cases have been filed against the leaders for allowing a provocative speech at the Dharma Sabha.
The supporters of right wing leaders who gathered outside the court waiting for their leaders to be released on bail began pelting stones at shops and vehicles in the area after bail was denied. The clash lasted for several hours causing damage to properties and shopkeepers.
As the news spread, people from another community too, started pelting stones at shops and vehicles.
Additional police forces were deployed to bring situation under control.
