Belagavi: The Department of Cardiac Surgery of KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital, successfully performed a rare and complex heart surgery on a 15-day-old male baby from Goa.

The baby, born at Goa Medical College, Bambolim, was rushed to the Department of Cardiac Surgery of KLES Hospital with symptoms of respiratory distress and heart failure and the baby was turning blue. Dr. Praveen Tambrallimath heading a team of cardiac surgeons, as part of a detailed examination of the child, advised a C T Angiogram and an ECHO done. The investigations revealed, a more significant portion of the aorta was narrowed down and blocked leading to an irregular supply of blood causing gasping, breathlessness, coughing and chocking.

The aorta is the main artery which supplies blood from the heart to the rest of the body and is thus a fundamental structure in the human body. This anomaly in medical terminology is known as “Hypoplastic Aortic arch.” A substantial portion of the aorta was blocked and the baby’s condition was severe and required a complex, longer and more difficult surgical intervention to save his life.

Dr. Praveen ably assisted by Dr. Nikunj Vyas, Neonatal Intensivist, anesthesia team had a detailed look at the baby and the parents were taken into confidence and a consent obtained for surgery. Open Heart Surgery is the only option in such a case. Dr. Praveen, an experienced and trained surgeon from the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi presently serving at KLES Hospital, took the challenging assignment and performed the surgery on the 3.5 Kg baby for over 7 hours with the support of Dr. Anand Wagrali, Anesthetist. The intricate surgery involved the reconstruction of the aorta after cooling the baby’s body to 24 degrees centigrade and interrupting blood supply to the lower part of the body and remaking it as healthy as possible and ensuring that the blockages were removed with smooth and uninterrupted blood flow to all the organs of the body.

The post operation excellent intensive care management was provided by Dr. Veeresh Manvi, Dr. Nidhi and Dr. Manisha Bhandankar. The baby withstood the surgery, recovered entirely and is due for discharge. A post-operative ECHO showed a considerable improvement in blood flow.

Dr. Praveen said that arriving at the decision at the right time was more important than performing the surgery. He also said that the baby was healthy, active and thriving. The parents hailing from Davangere, presently residing in Goa are extremely happy with the outcome of the surgery. Dr. Prabhakar Kore, Chairman of the KLE Society and Dr. M V Jali, Medical Director of the hospital, congratulated Dr. Praveen Tambrallimath and team for their surgical skill and technique in successfully performing the complicated surgery and saving the precious life.
