Women create comic to expose Yoga instructor’s sexual misconduct

Bengaluru: Frustrated by the inaction and blase attitude of the people in-charge, 10 women came together to create a comic, illustrating the sexual misconduct they had to deal with at a Yoga studio.

According to a report by The News Minute, the women were attending Yoga classes at The Practice Room, a Yoga studio in Bengaluru. The man accused of sexual misconduct is the owner of the establishment, Mohan Polamar.

According to the comic created by the harassed women, all was well when they began attending the classes. However, things turned ugly when Mohan began to touch them inappropriately under the pretext of “adjusting their asanas.”

One woman alleged that Mohan would pay her more attention, brush past her, touch her hand, moved his hand up her thigh while adjusting her posture and press his body against her.

Another woman alleged that he placed his entire body on her while she had her knees raised, his face mere inches away from hers. She also alleged that he would message after classes, saying things like “Hey gorgeous” and “I will take you out someday.” She soon quit the classes.

Mohan and his wife Jaya conduct the classes at this studio and are in charge of separate batches. When the women complained about Mohan’s behaviour, a committee, of which Jaya was a member, was formed to probe the matter.

After the probe, Mohan stepped down for a month. However, the women were not informed and neither was an apology made to them, said one of the women.

The women also alleged that Jaya rebuked them when they complained about her husband. She also told the women to leave the classes and not come back, they said.

Reportedly, Jaya has been circulating the comic made by the women on WhatsApp as an example of “how it can play out in a Yoga centre.” considering the era of the #MeToo movement.

It has also been reported that she has declined to clarify details about the case due to the committee’s investigation into the matter. She also claimed that she is not part of the investigation.

Meanwhile, the Yoga studio’s blog carries a statement from Mohan, wherein he denies all allegations against him.

His statement reads, “This I want to make clear: I have not deliberately touched a man or woman inappropriately in the last 5 years of teaching. The allegations and rumours have deeply impacted me and my relationship with you my students.”
