Bengaluru: Volunteers of Youth for Seva, a non-governmental organization and conservancy workers cleaned up Byrasandra Lake in Jayanagar on Sunday. The Byrasandra Lake, which was once spread across 12 acres, has now shrunk to a small portion of its original size, said Amith Amarnath of NGO Youth for Seva which participated in the drive.
He said a part of the lakebed had become a dumping ground for residents. Since morning, eight to 10 truckloads of waste have been cleared, he said.
Around 70 volunteers from the NGO, along with conservancy workers, removed unsegregated waste from the lakebed. The waste was segregated and dry waste sent to dry waste collection centres and the wet waste to composting centres, he said. Jayanagar corporator Gangambike Mallikarjun also lent support to the cleaning drive.
