Bengaluru: There seems to be no end to the controversies surrounding the Tipu Jayanti celebrations. The loose talk by politicians is taking the sheen out of the celebrations. In Ballari, Congress senior leader and newly elected MP V S Ugrappa, created a new controversy by stating that the original name of Tipu Sultan was Tippe Swamy.
Speaking at the Tipu Jayanti celebrations organised by the district administration, he stated that Tipu Sultan was born after Hyderali sought divine blessings of Nayakanahatti Tippe Swamy. “So his parents named him Tippe Swamy,” he said.
As the news of V S Ugrappa’s statement spread, right-wing activists started trolling him. Pro-people and progressive writers, including Congress leaders, however, are tight-lipped over the statement.
