Bengaluru: Primary and secondary education minister S Suresh Kumar has announced that lessons about Tipu Sulthan in textbooks will continue for another year.
Speaking to reporters in Mysuru, he said that the textbook printing order has already been issued for the next year to ensure that all students will get the textbooks on June 1, the first day of the new academic year 2020-21. “Content about Tipu Sulthan will remain in these textbooks,” he stated.
“The committee appointed by the state government to look into the demand for droping Tipu from the textbooks observed that an expert committee should be given this task and a decision can be taken after the committee report. So we are forming a new committee,” he said.
It can be recalled that Madikeri MP Appachchu Ranjan of the BJP appealed to the state government to remove mentions of Tipu Sulthan from lessons in the textbooks claiming that he massacred over 30,000 Kodavas in Kodagu.
