Bengaluru: Welcoming the Supreme Court’s directive to the Centre to set up special courts for “utmost expeditious disposal” of cases involving politicians, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that tainted politicians should not be allowed to contest polls.
Taking a jibe at his opponent and BJP’s chief ministerial candidate B S Yeddyurappa, Siddaramaiah on Wednesday stated that not just those with criminal records but even politicians who have FIRs registered against them should be barred from contesting polls.
That is the only way to stop politicians like Yeddyurappa from contesting elections, he said.
Speaking to reporters, veteran Congress leader and MP M Veerappa Moily said that this was a welcome move. Further, he added that the UPA regime had worked towards bringing about a legislation in this regard and that the Congress would build pressure on the Centre to bring about such an enactment.
