State-wide bandh call sees poor response across Karnataka

Bengaluru: The dawn to dusk Karnataka bandh called by several pro-Kannada organisations failed to evoke much response across the state. In Bengaluru, normal life was unaffected by the state-wide bandh.

Cab, autorickshaw and BMTC bus services have been available throughout the day and all major markets, including KR market and Yesvantpur market, have been open. KSRTC is operating all services while business establishments are open.

Meanwhile, pro-Kannada organisations are holding protests in all districts of the state against the government for its decision to set up a development authority for the Maratha community. While the pro-Kannada activists have termed the move anti-Kannada, the opposition Congress has accused the government of trying to woo the Marathas ahead of the bypolls.

Pro-Kannada leaders including Vatal Nagaraj were detained by the police and in Bengaluru, over 100 rowdy-sheeters were detained to ensure that they will not force anyone to join the bandh.

In all major cities of the state including Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Mangaluru, Kalaburugi, Belagavi and Davanagere, the response for the bandh has been very poor.
