Bengaluru: With state assembly election around the corner, the state government was worried about the drought-like situation in 160 taluks which would have lead to an anti-incumbency factor. But heavy rains in the month of August and the first week of September has brought cheers in the face of state government as well as revenue department officers.

According to the latest data, numbers of drought-hit taluks in the state has come down from 160 in the month of July to just 37. Only Sira taluk in Tumakuru district has been identified as the worst drought-hit taluk. “But according to our data, the taluk has also received good rainfall in September,” informed an officer from the revenue department.

According to the data, out of 176 taluks in the state, 48 taluks have received excess rainfall compared to normal rainfall. 91 taluks have received normal to excess rainfall while the deficit in the rainfall has been reported from 36 taluks mostly of Malnad and coastal districts.

According to the sources, state government is likely to prepare a final list of drought-hit taluks by the end of September. “We are supposed to prepare the list and send it to union government to start the relief works. But good rainfall has brought cheers in the face of farmers. We will prepare the final list by end of this month after calculating all the factors,” said a senior officer.
