Bengaluru: In a major setback to Mathe Mahadevi, who is leading the demand for separate religion tag for Lingayat community, on Wednesday, the Supreme Court decided not to quash Karnataka government’s decision to ban her book titled ‘Vachana Deepthi’.
In 1998, the state government had banned this book for changing Basavanna’s name in his vachanas in this book. This led to massive protests across the state. Following the protests, the state government had banned the book. Upset by this Mathe Mahadevi had moved to the High Court and then Supreme Court, both have declined to give any relief to Mathe Mahadevi.
On Wednesday, the divisional bench of the Suprme Court upheld the state government’s decision. Meanwhile, Akhila Bharatha Veerashaiva Mahasabha has welcomed the Supreme Court judgement.
