Bengaluru: L Narayana Reddy, a farmer from Bengaluru who shot to fame after adopting organic farming, passed away on Monday, January 14 morning at the age of 83. Reddy reportedly died of natural causes.
He is survived by his wife, three sons and eight grandchildren. His last rites were held this afternoon in the Sorahunse village near Varthur, Bengaluru.
Reddy had adopted organic farming after he had an encounter with a tourist from California in 1976. Inspired by a Japanese farmer’s book on organic farming ‘One Straw Revolution’ introduced to him by the tourist, Reddy began to incorporate the organic farming concepts in his farming. He was able to completely make a transition from using chemicals to natural farming by the year 1979. He was even able to successfully grow several crops together on his farm.
Over the years, he was invited to speak at several seminars all over the world. He even taught those interested in organic farming. He was also a recipient of the Nadoja award, an honour conferred on him by the Hampi Kannada University for his contribution to agriculture.
