Bengaluru: A cop was given a rather unusual reward after he chased down a thief and brought him to justice despite getting injured in the process.

Hanumanth, a policeman attached to the Bellandur police station here, was posted near Big Bazaar on Sarjapur Road on night duty when he heard calls for help.

He immediately pressed into action and soon found out that thieves had taken off with someone’s cellular phone on their bikes. The policeman gave chase on his own bike and followed them for about four kilometres when he finally caught up to them.

He managed to grab hold of one of the thieves, Arun Kumar (20) but got injured while doing so. He, however, did not let go of the miscreant and made sure that he was booked.

Arun is now in police custody while his accomplice remains at large.

Impressed by Hanumanth’s bravery and determination, the police department gave him a cash reward of Rs 10,000 and a honeymoon package to Kerala worth Rs 25,000.

Hanumanth was married back in November 2017 but, owing to his duties and responsibilities, he was unable to take time off for his honeymoon.

An official from the department said that they wanted to encourage such shows of bravery in the department which is so rare these days.
