Bengaluru: On Monday, September 30, Bengaluru Regional Commissioner Harsha Gupta received two letters. One letter from the revenue department seeking postponement of the BBMP mayor and deputy mayor elections followed by another letter from Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa requesting the same.

But Gupta, who is considered to be a strict officer, declined to entertain both letters.

As a result, the election for the BBMP mayor, deputy mayor, and four standing committees will be held today on October 1.

Congress-JD(S) alliance

The JD(S)-Congress alliance continued in the BBMP elections. Sathyanarayana, a Congress strongman from Malleshwarram, will be the Congress candidate for the mayor’s post and is supported by the JD(S). JD(S) leader Gangamma will be the deputy mayoral candidate who will be supported by the Congress.

However, there is no clarity on who will be the BJP candidate. “The party is a divided house. If the Congress and JD(S) leaders work hard it is not difficult for them to retain power,” said a BJP MLA from the city.

The total number of votes, including MLAs, MLCs and the MPs, is 257. BJP has 125 members, Congress has 104, and the JDS has 21. As many as seven candidates are independents. The majority mark is 129 votes.
