Bengaluru: The Department of Railways released Rs. 492.87 crore funds to the four-track railway lane project between Cantonment and Whitefield in Bengaluru, which was pending over the last 20 years. This would add two more routes to the sub-urban railway project of the city.
The project of four lane between Kranthiveera Sangolli Rayanna station to White Field division was sanctioned in 1997-98. However, as there was no availability of land and increase in the project cost kept the project pending for two decades.
The urban development ministry decided that the four-lane project between Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna station and White Field is not workable and dropped it. It recommended for the extension of Namma Metro and overall development of K R Puram and White Field stations.
The project has been redesigned according to the availability of land. Two tracks will be installed beside the existing tracks. It will be initiated soon and it would be finished within two-three years. This project would help the IT workers of White Field region, said a Railway Department official.
Railway passengers and activists were demanding to start additional trains in Baiyappannahalli- White Field lanes. Around 30 trains travel from each direction, in this route every day. Still, during the peak hours, passengers face the same density. As the metro project between Old Madras road and White Field road is still going on, passengers struggle because of the traffic density.
The Union government had sanctioned Rs.12,000 crore for the sub-urban railway project to increase the connectivity recently.
