Bengaluru: Members of the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) visited the Bengaluru Central Prison in Parappana Agrahara on Tuesday to take stock of the situation in the backdrop of allegations of human rights violations, which came into the spotlight after former DIG (Prisons) D. Roopa’s report on alleged irregularities.

Roopa had submitted two reports in July on the irregularities in Bengaluru Central Prison.

KSHRC acting chairperson Meera C. Saksena visited the prison around noon and left at 3 p.m. The KSHRC, which took up a suo motu case regarding alleged assault on inmates by prison officials, has also recommended measures to improve the condition of prisoners, including reintroducing tele-medicine in the prison hospital and recruitment of more medical staff as there is shortage of doctors and paramedic staff.

Following this, ADGP Prisons N.S. Megharikh, along with senior prison officials, visited the prison and held a meeting with officials. Megharikh also spoke with a few prisoners and heard their grievances. “It was a general visit by KSHRC. The inmates had complaints on their releases, remissions and paroles and other facilities as per prison manual, which they shared with the officials,” a prison official said.
