Bengaluru: The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday ordered issue of notices to the State government and the BBMP on a petition seeking direction to fill potholes in a scientific manner in the city.

A Division Bench comprising acting Chief Justice H.G. Ramesh and Justice P.S. Dinesh Kumar passed the order on a PIL petition filed by Dove Drive Without Borders Foundation, Bengaluru. Pointing out that accidents were occurring because of potholes, the petitioner-foundation has also complained that non-installation of signage indicating the presence of road dividers and humps is also a cause for accidents in the city. The petitioner has contended that no action was taken by the authorities to protect the interests of motorists.

Three engineers suspended

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) cracked the whip on engineers under whose jurisdiction potholes were found.

BBMP Commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad suspended C.V. Raman Nagar ward assistant engineer Mallinatha Malkapura, sub-division executive engineer Amrutkumar Salunki, and Shivajinagar sub-division assistant executive engineer Saifuddin on Tuesday.

Prasad inspected East zone, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Yelahanka and West zone. “There is a marked change in the roads compared to how they were on October 15,” he said.

The BBMP Commissioner added that citizens could approach the BBMP if there were potholes in their locality and promised that they would be fixed within 48 hours.
