Bengaluru: A former policeman was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing his adopted daughter.
The accused, Anand Kumar (63), was arrested on December 18, by the Bengaluru police based on the 17-year-old victim’s complaint. The victim was allegedly sexually abused for at least three years.
Traumatised and not able to deal with the abuse, the girl left home two years ago and started living at a nearby bus stop.
Bangalore Oniyavara Seva Coota (BOSCO), a non-profit organisation that works on children’s issues had rescued the girl. She was later admitted to a children’s home run by another NGO in the city. During one of the counselling sessions, the victim revealed the sexual abuse she had experienced in the past.
Speaking to The News Minute, a senior police official said, “The sexual abuse happened during 2013-16. The girl was rescued by BOSCO first. We came to know about the incident when she reported it to the NGO. We immediately booked the accused, who is currently in judicial custody.”
Preliminary investigations have revealed that Shobha, wife of Anand Kumar, neither helped the victim nor reported about it to the police. Cops claim that Anand confessed that he used to send his wife and other members of the house to the temple and then assault the adopted daughter.
The accused had served as a sub-inspector in the Bengaluru police department, and was working with a commercial gold loan company as a law advisor after retiring from the force.
According to the police, Anand and his wife Shobha had adopted the girl after their biological daughter died a few years ago.
A case has been filed against the accused under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 6 and 10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Anand is currently lodged in Parappana Agrahara central prison.
