Bengaluru: The Madiwala policed have arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly cheating an elderly woman and her daughter who suffers from paralysis by pretending to be a Godman.

The police have identified the accused as Munassir. The police said Munassir had met 85-year-old Puttamma at a drug store near their house in BTM Layout while she was buying medicines for her daughter early this month. He introduced himself as a swami from a mutt and said he could cure her daughter with some rituals.

The mother, who was desperately hoping her daughter could be cured, believed Munassir and invited him to their house the next day when her son would be at work. Munassir instructed Puttamma to wear all the gold jewellery they owned for a ritual, according to the police.

While performing the ritual, he gave them water mixed with some powder which made them lose their consciousness for hours. It was only in the evening, when the son returned home and woke them up that Puttamma realised she had been robbed of gold jewellery weighing 160 g.

The Madiwala police tracked down Munassir based on CCTV camera footage from the drug store. They were able to recover the stolen gold jewellery from him.
