Bengaluru: Here is the New Year shocker for the city residents. Starting from January 1, they need to pay extra for garbage collection from their doorsteps.
According to a notification issued by the state government, each household shall pay Rs.200 per month as the garbage fee.
However, if the monthly electricity bill of a household is less than Rs.200, they will be charged Rs.100 while considering them as economically backward families.
It can be recalled that recently, the BBMP had cleared new garbage management rules 2020. These rules allow monthly cess collection.
The BBMP has notified various slabs of this cess. Highest slab is Rs.14,000 for those who generate over 100 kilograms of waste. All the hotels, choultries, hospitals fall under this category. Several service providers informed that this new cess is a death knell as paying Rs. 14,000 per month is not an easy job.
D Randeep, special commissioner, BBMP has justified the new cess citing the new rules approved by the BBMP.
Meanwhile, hundreds of city residents have opposed the new cess system on the social media. Many called for priivatisation of entire BBMP which has failed in better utilisation of the resources.
