Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday asked the State government to file its statement of objections within three days on the petitions questioning the State government’s power to examine the request for grant of minority religion status to Veerashaiva Lingayat/Lingayat communities in the State.

A Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice S. Sunil Dutt Yadav, issued the direction to the government.

The court adjourned further hearing on the petition till March 9.

The petitioners also questioned the constitution of a committee, set up by the Karnataka State Minorities Commission (KSMC), to examine the demand for grant of minority religion status to Veerashaiva Lingayat/Lingayat community as per the direction issued by the government.

The petitioners also alleged that a majority of members of the committee had already expressed their views for grant of minority status.
