Bengaluru/New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India, in its verdict on the Mhadei water dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka, on Thursday, February 20, directed the Central government to roll out a notification with regard to the Mhadei water project.
Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa passed on this information to the House on the third day of the joint session of legislative bodies on Thursday.
“It is indeed good news for Karnataka, as the Supreme Court has directed the release of 14 TMCs of water, which was the requirement of the state,” he said.
It can be recalled that earlier, the Karnataka government had requested the Centre to pass a gazette notification over the project, as the Maharashtra and Goa governments had pressurized the Centre not to favour Karnataka in this matter. Although the state government had made an appeal to the Centre, as the case was still pending before the Supreme Court, the Centre had said that it was not possible to do so.
However, the proceedings in relation to the petitions filed by three states (Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa) will begin in the Supreme Court from July 15 this year.
