Bengaluru: The JDS strategy of fielding three more Sumalathas in Mandya Lok Sabha constituency to confuse the voters did not pay off as the three could not bag votes that could make a difference.

According to the ECI website, three other Sumalathas fielded by the JDS secured as many as 20,557 votes. “If the contest went for a wire, this number was enough for Nikhi’s victory. But, the JDS strategy didn’t work out,” said a Congress leader.

Sumalatha of 18 serial number secured 8,898 votes while serial number 21 secured 8,542 votes. Sumalatha of serial number 22 secured 3,117 votes.

Sumalatha Ambareesh secured 5,25,865 votes and defeated Nikhil Kumaraswamy with a margin of 1,25,876 votes.
