Bengaluru/Mandya: The Belakavadi Police in Mandya district arrested Srinivas, father of Swathi who was murdered along with her husband Nandish and thrown into the River Cauvery near Shivanasamudra. Police have confirmed that it is an act of honour killing.
According to the police, on Friday, November 16, they fished out two tied up bodies from the river. The bodies were identified as Nandish (26) and Swathi (19), both from Krishnagiri. Investigations revealed that it was an act of honour killing as Swathi’s family was against the marriage.
“Nandish belongs to scheduled caste while Swathi belongs to Other Backward Classes (OBC). The family was against the marriage. So the newly-wed couple had eloped and was staying in Mandya city. Recently, Swathi’s parents had arrived at Mandya and on the pretext of taking the couple to Krishnagiri, made them board an SUV. After reaching an isolated place near Shivanasamudra, the family members assaulted both of them, tied their hands and legs and threw them into the river. As their hands and legs were tied they died in the river. The incident came to light when the bodies started floating,” said the police.
“Three accused have been arrested in connection with the murder,” police said.
