Bengaluru: The city police recently arrested a 29-year-old man for refusing to stand up and hurling abuses while the national anthem was playing in a cinema hall. The man, however, claims that he was attacked by a mob for remaining in his seat during the national anthem.

The youth, Jithin, a resident of Sanjaynagar, was booked under the Prevention of Insult to National Honours Act.

He took to Twitter and Reddit to elaborate on his unfortunate experience. He wrote that he was harassed and assaulted by “thugs at an INOX Movies theatre” unprovoked because he did not stand up for the national anthem. “I get hit on the face and they incite a crowd against me,” he wrote on Reddit.

He also alleged that the manager disregarded the incident and that the police too had dismissed the crowd.

While speaking to The News Minute, Jithin alleged that the police had initially asked to take his statement as he wanted to file a complaint against those who had assaulted him, but they later changed their tune and started being aggressive with him, even detaining him against his will.

The police, however, refuted these claims saying that a complaint was filed against him for allegedly hurling abuses while the national anthem was playing, which is why he was arrested.

Jithin, on the other hand, has an explanation for this. In his post, he said that he used expletives while the national anthem was playing only because he was being threatened with physical harm.

It can be recalled that the Supreme Court had said that, while it is not compulsory for the national anthem to be played in cinema halls, the people must stand for the anthem if at all it is played. Only the differently-abled are exempt from this order.
