Bengaluru: Here is good news for those fighting for revival and rejuvenation of lakes and bad news for the officials concerned who failed to keep water bodies clean. The Karnataka Lokayukta has decided to inspect the lakes suspected to be encroached or polluted by sewage inflow from January 31.

Lokayukta P. Vishwanath Shetty on Thursday pulled up Bangalore Development Authority, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board for the lack of upkeep of lakes. Hearing a complaint by United Bengaluru, a group of citizens fighting for the city’s lakes, the Lokayukta on Thursday gave three months to BDA and two months to BBMP, to survey all the lakes in their jurisdiction, identify and remove encroachments.

The Lokayukta will also issue a notice to BWSSB to submit an action plan on stopping the inflow of sewerage into lakes. United Bengaluru has been asked to submit suggestions for rejuvenation of lakes.

Before the next hearing on April 15, the Lokayukta will inspect lakes along with United Bengaluru.

In a press statement, United Bengaluru said that the Lokayukta will visit Byramangala reservoir and Vrushabhavathi Valley on January 31, and Talaghatapura, Sompura, Gubbalala, Vasanathapura and Sarakki lakes on February 2.
