Mangaluru: Due to lockdown, the life of over 5,000 migrant labourers is in distress in Dakshina Kannada district. Though district administration and labour department have identified around 2,800 migrant labourers, the remaining migrant labourers are left in lurch to fend for themselves.
It is evident that the the migrant labourers who are working as daily wagers and construction labourers have been rendered jobless after the lockdown announcement.
The 2,800 workers identified by the district administration have been supplied with the food kit, jointly by district administration and labour department. But, remaining migrant labourers are struggling to battle the pangs of stomach.
As per the Interstate Migrant Labourers Act, they need to get permission to work here from their employer.
Though registration of migrant labourers is not mandatory, in order to receive some facility from the government, they need to get registered under labour department with the help of the employer.
Since most of the migrant labourers are not registered so far, neither district administration nor the labour department is aware of the statistics about the migrant labourers who are working in Dakshina Kannada district.
With no help, many migrant workers are living at the mercy of the some kind-hearted individuals and organizations that have been doing yeoman by donating food.
