Local bodies to maintain govt schools in their jurisdiction soon

Bengaluru: In a bid to ensure that government schools do not face any infrastructure related issues, the state government has decided to transfer the school maintenance responsibility to the local self government agencies like panchayats, corporations etc.

A decision in this regard was taken following the recent finding that 36,000 classrooms in the state needed to be demolished as they are in bad condition.

Under the new system local self government agencies must ensure good infrastructure, facilities like toilet, drinking water facilities etc and to do so the Department of Public Instruction will release funds directly to them.

According to the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) officials, as per the proposal, all the MLAs and MLCs must reserve 30% of their local area development fund for the school developments. DPI also decided to make teachers free from any non academic responsibilities like the census, surveys etc.
