Bengaluru: Journalist Hemanth Kumar, remanded to judicial custody on April 30 by the Special Court for People's Representatives, was granted conditional bail, here on Wednesday, May 2.

Justice Ramachandra D Huddar, who heard the arguments by Hemanth Kumar’s lawyer Vivek Reddy, granted conditional bail on Rs 50000 as bond and surity.

Earlier, the journo was booked for publishing fake letter in the name of State Home Minister M B Patil to the then All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Sonia Gandhi regarding the Lingayat separate religion row.

Patil had filed a complaint against the letter published in one of the Kannada dailies, with the Adarsh Nagar Police Station of Vijayapura.

The case was then handled by CID police, who had nabbed Post Card Editor Mahesh Vikram Hegde and interrogated him, during which he had revealed Hemanth Kumar’s name.

Based on this, on April 27, the police nabbed Hemanth Kumar and after three days of police custody, on April 30 produced him before the special court.

The court had remanded him to judicial custody until May 9.
