Mysore: Krishnarajasagar (KRS) dam that used to have abundance of water during the monsoon has turned into empty expanse. The water crisis will hit Mysore, Mandya and Bangalore, if it does not rain the catchment areas in Cauvery hill range.
The people are praying rain gods to shower the required rains. The water released from Hemavati reservoir a few days ago has reached KRS which would not suffice for a week. The people who have seen the expanse of water in KRS in the past cannot believe their eyes as one can see the barren land underneath expanse of water now. The farmers are worried over the prospect of their crops.
The officials have already surveyed the water levels in KRS and stated that the water is sufficient for on fifteen days. The people residing in the vicinity of KRS are found washing their clothes inside the KRS that has 66.55 feet of water. In spite of Mysore city needs 280 mld, it only supplies about 148 mld. Its a challenge for the district administration to set off this deficit.
A few wards in the city are facing acute shortage of water, while others face no difficulties in this regard. The municipal body is supplying drinking water once in 2 to 3 days to such wards that face acute shortage of water. Thirty-two tankers are ferrying water to different wards. One-hundred-two bore wells were restored, five bore wells were re-drilled. Besides, additional pipes were installed to 54 bore wells. Seven new bore wells are dug up.
A total of 689 electric pumps installed to bore wells are supplying drinking water to households across the city. The depleting underground water resources are a major concern as the monsoon rains seemed delayed.
