KPCL plant fire: Two more engineers succumb

Bengaluru: Tragically, two more engineers who were injured in the KPCL plant fire in Bengaluru succumbed on Monday.

As reported by TNM, 56-year-old Krishna Bhat (Executive Engineer) and 58-year-old Manjappa (Assistant Executive Engineer) are the deceased. With this, the total death toll of the incident has risen to three.

It can be recalled that on October 2, a fire broke out at the power plant after a gas leak. Two persons were severely injured and 15 others suffered minor injuries. The two who died on Monday were among the 15 people who were injured in the incident, according to The Hindu.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning in Yelahanka and the injured were immediately rushed to a hospital. One of the two engineers who suffered serious injuries, identified as Balraj Murugan, died days after the incident on October 6.

About the cause of the fire, a statement by the KPCL had read, “The root cause is being analysed to find out the exact reason for the incident. The Combined Cycle Gas Power Plant at Yelahanka is under construction and commissioning phase. The construction is being done by the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).”

According to Karnataka state fire and emergency services director K Shiva Kumar, the plant was supposed to commission its operations in December. The fire broke out when the engineers were testing the plant. Variations in pressure were observed during testing and the fire broke out when the engineers were conducting several checks to test the turbine.
