Kambala should get Constitutional recognition: Governor

Bengaluru: “Kambala is a symbol of manliness. The demand for the Constitutional identity for Kambala can be justified”, said Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala.

Speaking after inaugurating the Tulunada Utsava and Tulu Sahitya Sammelana by “Tulukoota Bengaluru”, the governor motivated Tuluvas to continue their agitation for the Constitutional recognition of Kambala.

“Kambala is for those who have that capacity. There man runs with the buffalo for several meters. How can it be cruelty against the animal? This is a traditional sport. It will not harm animals but it will increase their capacity”, he said.

“Now, elections are near in 2019. The ruling party may be the same or it may change, but it is an opportunity to keep your demands before politicians and get them fulfilled”, he suggested.

He added that there was a committee to review the application to recognise anyone as SC, ST or a backward class and suggested that the Tuluvas should submit an application before the committee. “That committee would submit a report to the Central government. If Tuluvas submit an application, I will advise them to consider it”, he said.

Lokayukta Justice Vishwanatha Shetty demanded to add the Tulu language to the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution. Housing Minister M Krishnappa assured that only Bunts and Devadigas had applied for the sites, but there were civic amenity sites to give and financial aid could be given.

Tulukoota Bengaluru President K Jayarama Sooda was happy as Housing Minister M Krishnappa agreed to give 2 acres of government land. The exhibition which reflected the Tulu culture and performance of traditional art forms attracted many visitors.
