Bengaluru: It has come to light that the abandoned infant, who had been nursed back to life by a policewoman, succumbed to illness at the Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital at Jayanagara in Bengaluru on June 7.

The hours-old baby had been found from Celebrity Layout, Doddathoguru on June 4. The newborn had got a new lease on life after policewoman Archana breastfed the hungry baby at the Electonic City Police Station. People appreciated the kind act of the police constable for having gone beyond the call of duty for saving the child’s life. The baby was then rushed to a government-run childcare centre. The police had named him “Kumaraswamy”, as he was under the governments care. Incidentally, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy had lauded Archana for her gesture.

However, on the very next day, the baby was hospitalised due to health complications. It was found that the baby had sustained head injuries. The baby boy did not respond to treatment and finally passed away on June 7, said Director of Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital Asha Benakappa.

The death came as a blow to lady constable Archana who had virtually saved the life of the child. “We had noticed bruises on the head of the infant when he was first brought to the police station. I did not know the same injury would be the killer. I am really sad to know of his death”, she said.
