Indian couple stabbed in Germany, husband succumbs

Bengaluru: A Guinean man stabbed couple in Munich, Germany killing husband Prashant Basrur(49) and injuring the wife Smita(43) on Friday. They belong to Udupi district in Karnataka.

External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, in her tweet said “Indian couple Prashant and Smita Basarur were stabbed by an immigrant near Munich. Unfortunately, Prashant has expired. Smita is stable. We are facilitating the travel of Prashant’s brother to Germany. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.” She has also appreciated the work of Consulate general in Munich in this issue.

The authorities have ruled out the possibility of a hate crime after the preliminary investigations.

The couple was attacked by a kitchen knife, which was later secured by the police. The attacker was an immigrant from New Guinea and his motive to attack the couple is not yet clear. Investigation to ascertain the motive behind the crime is underway.

According to media reports, the couple and their attacker lived in the same apartment building. There was some dispute between the Guinean and the Indian couple. When the dispute went out of proportion he attacked the couple with a knife.

The couple, both working in the Information Technology sector moved to Germany 15 years ago and got German citizenship just last year.

The attacker did not show any resistance when the police arrested him. The police were alerted by the neighbours. He was produced in the Augsburg court and was charged for attempt murder. Now after the death of Prashant, the accused will be charged for murder.

The German authorities are taking care of the children of the couple.
Smita’s brother will be reaching Germany shortly.
