Bengaluru: Indian Meteorological Department has decided to install two weather radars in Bengaluru and Mangaluru. According to sources, these radars can be able to issue weather warnings three hours in advance.
The IMD has started identifying the location to set up these two radars in both the places.
Presently, the IMD Karnataka is depending on ISRO satellite images and input sent by Chennai radar center to issue weather advisory and warnings. This has been a major reason behind delay in issuing warnings many are times. To ensure that all the weather warnings an be generated locally, the IMD has decided to set up two radar centers in the state itself.
These radars can send a picture once in every seven minutes. “Presently we are depending upon Chennai radar to issue weather advisory. But the issue is that after crossing 250 kilo meters the clarity of pictures starts coming down creating problem while analyzing. But once radar centers are established in Mangaluru and Bengaluru we can generate all the pictures locally,” said a senior officer.
