Bengaluru: In a big embarrassment to the ruling JDS, state higher education minister GT Devegowda made it clear that his department under which the Belagavi-headquartered Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) falls, didn’t recommend for the bifurcation of the university and set up a new university in Hassan.

“Neither me nor my department submitted any proposal in this regard. We don’t have any intention of starting a new university,” he told reporters in Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, 50 MLAs from North Karnataka met CM HD Kumaraswamy, on Thursday night in Bengaluru and urged him to drop the proposal of VTU bifurcation. CM HDK assured them of looking at the issue. “He suggested MLAs to convince PWD minister HD Revanna first,” said sources.

If sources in the JDS to be believed, Revanna is adamant on starting the new technological university in Hassan. “He wanted to name it after HD Deve Gowda,” said a JDS leader who is privy to the developments.
