HDK turns to NRN to revive Karnataka Planning Board?

Bengaluru: Close on the heels of the Narendra Modi government announcing lateral entry of professionals in to bureaucratic cadres and opening up 10 departments for induction of experts at the level of Joint Secretary, Kartanaka government too seems to have taken a cue.

It is now believed that Infosys Co-founder NR Narayana Murthy is all set to don a new hat. This time, he is going to take up the crucial role of Chief of Karnataka Planning Board. If this happens then Murthy would be the first technocrat to head the planning board in the State and the first professional in the last 18 years. But, what is important is that the Board, which has been dead all this while may get a new lease of life.

It is said that Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy met the IT Titan on June 6 and discussed the same with Murthy. The CM is of the opinion that the image of the government will get a boost if NRN takes up the position.

The CM is quoted in Bangalore Mirror saying that he also intends to bring on board prominent experts from various sectors as members to restore the board’s credibility.

The state planning board is a constitutional body and the Chief Minister is its chairman; some of the functions of the State planning board include assessing resources and formulating plans for overall development of the state, besides monitoring progress of plan implementation.

Appointment of NRN will break the long held tradition of appointment to the Board on political considerations and somewhere the trend had made the Board passive. Sources say that former union minister CM Ibrahim who was the deputy chairman of the board in the previous government did not chair even a single meeting and the government too did not appoint any other board member. His predecessors too do not have any great track record as far as performance of the board is considered.

There are hopes that lot of important works may take off if a person of NRN’s caliber takes up the post. However, NRN is yet to confirm the same.
