Bengaluru: The Panchayat elections, that were due to be held by May end, have been postponed by six months considering the COVID-19 crisis, informed Panchayat Raj minister K S Eshwarappa.
As per a report by ANI, however, administrative councils will be formed at every Gram Panchayat as the terms of many members will be ending by June to July.
Speaking during a press conference, the minister said that there are 6,012 Gram Panchayats in the state and most of their terms will end by June to July. “Due to the COVID-19 crisis, we will not conduct the elections. We will postpone them for six months,” he added.
Assuring that the administrative bodies will not be left empty, he said that administrative councils will be formed at every Gram Panchayat under the Gram Swaraj and Panchayat Raj Act of 1993.
It can be recalled that a few days ago, KPCC president D K Shivakumar had urged the state government to postpone the Panchayat elections by six months as it would not be possible to conduct the same in the current scenario.
As of 12 PM on Saturday, May 16, the state has reported 1079 positive COVID-19 cases and 36 deaths.
