Bengaluru: Even as several government schools face closure every year due to shortage of students, the government, in its bid to empower the government schools has decided to make it mandatory for each Gram Panchayat to have one high school and every hobli to have one college. The government deems it fit to upgrade the existing schools and colleges rather than opening new one, it is said.

In this direction, it is said that around 1,000 schools will be upgraded in the state. The schools which have the 8th standard would get classes up to SSLC and high schools would get classes up to PUC. The government has asked the Department of Education to submit a detailed report pertaining to the issue after a review. The government would have to spend around Rs. 500 crores to build classrooms and renovation of buildings.

A committee of Legislative Council Teachers’ Constituency’s representatives has been constituted to discuss and decide on the quality of the content of the syllabus and other related issues. the Committee is expected to report how history, environment, financial and cultural contents can be added to it.

The new high schools and colleges would start from the beginning of the next academic year. All precautions will be taken to avoid the dearth of teachers. The government has to give aid from 1994-95 and should give prominence to the appointment of teachers, said the department sources adding that if these core issues are not addressed then all efforts to empower government school will fall flat.
