Bengaluru: Several lives are lost on roads due to the pathetic quality of roads. However, the Karnataka High Court, in a landmark judgement has said that if anyone sustains injuries due to the poor roads in the BBMP ambit, the corporation needs to pay compensation.
A division bench headed by the Chief Justice AS Oka delivered this landmark verdict and made it clear that good roads are the constitutional rights of the people.
Four city residents led by Vijayan Menon, a resident of Koramangala had moved to the court through a Public Interest Litigation in this regard.
In its verdict, the court referred a Supreme Court judgement in this regard.
Leading a dignified life is everyone’s constitutional right. Every life is precious. Declining quality of roads is denying the people their constitutional right,” stated the High Court.
