Bengaluru: One of the ambitious projects launched by former CM Siddaramaiah across the state was Indira canteens, which aimed at providing food at all at an affordable price. These canteens have become popular due to the quality of food and the affordability. But the new coalition government headed by HD Kumaraswamy is finding it difficult to extend the scheme to all the taluk headquarters reportedly due to financial crunch.

As per the original plan, the state government intended to open one Indira canteen in each taluk headquarters. However, it is learnt that 150 taluk centers are yet to get these canteens.

“A total of 249 canteens were planned at the taluk level. Among them, only 99 have started. Rest of the canteen proposals are facing finacial issues, despite the work of building being underway,” said sources in the state government.

An officer privy to the developments said by that though there were concrete plans to set up the canteen by December 2018, financial paucity is a major impediment.

The situation became this bad only after the announcement of the farm loan waiver scheme.
