Bengaluru: The state government has decided to drop its proposed plan of constructing underground tunnels to overcome traffic congestion on city roads at a whopping cost of Rs 600 Crore per kilometre, it is gathered.
As per the proposal mooted a year ago, the state government wanted to build three tunnel roads between Kumara Krupa-Hebbal Junction (6 kilometres), Nayandahalli junction to Majestic (7 kilometres) and Jalahalli to Airforce station (3 kilometres).
A Bulgaria-based company was given the task of preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR). As per an estimation, Rs 600 Crore was required to build a kilometre of underground tunnel. The state government had decided to allow the company, which comes forward to construct the road to collect toll.
But now according to the sources, the state government has dropped the project fearing fresh onslaught of corruption charges as was witnessed during the steel flyover project.
“The Bulgaria based company has not submitted the DPR. The state government fears that this mega-project may end up in corruption charges and is not ready to face another trial at the time of the election. So the project has been dropped”, informed an officer who is privy to the developments.
This project was first proposed following the public outburst against steel bridge between Chalukya Circle and Hebbal which got shelved following protests by locals.
