Bengaluru/New Delhi: The Union Ministry for Highways and Road Transport has passed the notification regarding a new project for making the installation of green number plates on electrical vehicles mandatory.
To motivate the usage of environment-friendly electric vehicles, the central government which has already declared tax concession, subsidy and other offers, now has come with this new project.
At present, across the country, private vehicles have white number boards and rented or passenger vehicles have yellow number plates. Motor Vehicles Act Section 50, Sub Rule 2 has been amended, so that electric vehicles will be fitted with green licence plates bearing numbers in white fonts for private cars and yellow font for taxis.
11,000 electric vehicles
In Karnataka, there are about 1.92 Crore vehicles with more than one lakh of them vehicles getting added every month. The smoke emitted by vehicles has been the main reason for air pollution in the cities. In comparison, there are very few electric vehicles-only 11, 684 electric vehicles ply in the state, including 7,185 two-wheelers and 4,004 light motor vehicles.
Decreased electricity price
In Bengaluru, though there are 73 lakh vehicles, the number of electric vehicles is a meagre 6,275. So, both state and union governments have declared new schemes to promote the use of electric vehicles. The state government has declared road tax concession whereas Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) decided to provide electricity for Rs. 4.85/unit for those who establish electric vehicle charging centres just like petrol bunks.
