COVID-19 positive politicians do not trust govt hospitals to treat them?

Bengaluru: It is important to follow what you preach, but in a rather disheaterning reality, most of the politicians who make tall claims about the government hospitals and the need to utlise the facilities there have got admitted to private hospital after being tested positive for COVID-19.

From Union Home Minister Amit Shah to leaders across the country, who were tested COVID-19 positive, most of them have all opted to go to private hospitals for treatment.

“True. Wonder why our Home Minister, when ill, chose not to go to AIIMS but to a private hospital in a neighbouring state. Public institutions need the patronage of the powerful if they are to inspire public confidence,” tweeted Congress MP Shashi Throor, after the Home Minister got admitted to Medana Hospital for treatment.

Similarly, Madhya Pradesh CM Shivaraj Singh Chouhan, who was discharged on August 5 after being treated for COVID-19 too was in a private hospital for treatment.

In Karnataka, from Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, all trusted the private hospitals to treat them for the infection.

Only a few politicians in the the country opted for government-aided or government-run hospitals. Uttar Pradesh Minister of Technical Education, Kamal Rani Varun was admitted at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, and Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj, admitted at AIIMS, Rishikesh. However, Rani succumbed to the virus recently.

In Bihar, senior RJD leader and former Union minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh was admitted to AIIMS, Patna. So also Jibesh Kumar Mishra. However, Mishra happens to be the only legislator from the ruling dispensation to die of COVID-19.

While medicos say that this move of the politicians kind of demotivates the scores and scores of COVID warriors risking their lives in the government-run hospitals, many others argue that security issues are a concern and hence private hospitals are the best option for the politicians.

Ironically, in Karnataka, the elected representatives are even given reimbursement for the treatement that they undergo in private hospitals, totally making a mockery of the existing rules.

As per rules, the elected representatives should first go to a government hospital and in case the required facilities are not available then, with an endorsement from the government hospital, the elected representative can be admitted to a private hospital. Only when this procedure is followed, the bills can be reimbursed by the government.

But, it has been noticed that many politicians directly go to private hospitals and still manage to foot the bills.
